Accessibility Barriers

Reliable Interface Stability

The User Reality: For users managing anxiety or sequencing challenges, or who rely on routine, unpredictable interface behaviour can make an environment feel unstable, exhausting and overwhelming. Establishing spatial consistency - i.e., placing essential tools in fixed, dependable locations - creates a psychological anchor that builds user confidence and independence.

Research: Crompton et al. (2020) note that a lack of predictability can cause users to become hesitant to interact for fear of jarring mechanical changes.

The Openality Standard

Establish a stable foundation for interaction by ensuring that the location and behaviour of interactive elements are consistent across all sessions and updates.

  • Constraint: The interface layout and behaviours must not vary unpredictably between sessions or updates.
  • Requirement: Ensure layout, location, and behaviour of interactive elements are consistent and repeatable.

Core Behaviours

  • Consistent Layout Anchoring - Critical interactive elements (e.g., Home button, current objective display) occupy fixed positions across all screens and sessions, providing a reliable anchor for user orientation and recovery.

Primary Interaction Patterns

  • The Universal Safety Net - A persistent, easily accessible action (e.g., looking at feet or pressing a button) that immediately transports the user to a safe zone or main menu, providing an escape route from disorienting situations.
