The Universal Safety Net
Interaction Pattern
Overview
A "Bailout" mechanism to prevent users from becoming stuck or overwhelmed.
Implementation Specification
A standardised, always-available input (e.g., a dedicated hardware button or a specific gaze gesture like looking at feet) that immediately pauses the experience and opens a high-contrast "Safety Menu." The menu offers a route to the safety of The Neutral Buffer Zone.

Dependencies
Safe Retreat Behaviour: The Universal Safety Net relies on the concept of a "Safe Zone" as a designated area where users can retreat to when overwhelmed. The Safety Menu provides a quick and accessible way for users to access the Safe Zone without needing to navigate through complex menus or physically remove their headset.
Consistent Layout Anchoring Behaviour: The activation method and the menu location must be predictable to be effective in a panic state.
The Neutral Buffer Zone: The Safety Menu provides a route to the safety of The Neutral Buffer Zone, where users can take a break and down-regulate before returning to the main experience.
Enhancements
Shallow Navigation Behaviour could be applied to the Safety Menu itself to ensure "Quit" or "Restart" functions are immediately available.
